While bats themselves are harmless, it’s still unwise to allow them to live within your home.  Bats carry diseases, like rabies, and can cause property damage if left to their own devices.  You’ll also be painfully aware of a bat’s presence if one dies within your walls.  So, what should you do if you find bats in your home?  Don’t panic.  Here are some quick tips to follow before you call us.

Don’t try to catch them yourself.

In an attempt to catch the bat or bats before you call a professional, you may end up scaring them into hard-to-reach places.  This means it’ll be much more difficult to remove them, which can cause complications.  You could also accidentally harm the bat.  Remember, bats are timid and frightened creatures; you don’t have to touch them for them to injure themselves in an attempt to escape from your trap.

Seal off holes and exits where you see them.

Bats usually come into homes through tiny holes in the wall, or open attic windows.  You don’t want any other bats getting in, so close these right away.  This will also keep the current bats residing in your home from escaping.  If you can confine the bat to a single room, that’s excellent.  It makes it much easier for us to remove the bat once we arrive.

Don’t use repellents.

Chemical repellents are dangerous for the environment, animals, and humans.  The toxic ingredients in most bat repellents linger within a home for long periods of time, and when inhaled, they can cause internal damage.  You also want to try your best to capture the bat humanely, and chemicals will simply kill it.   It’s important to Shumaker’s Animal Control that we conduct every animal removal operation in a humane fashion.  Please follow in our footsteps!
