Foxes, like raccoons and rats, can wreak havoc on your garbage and the outside of your home. They live throughout Asia, Europe and the northern parts of North America. They are mainly found in wooded areas, though they can find their way into your neighborhood. In the winter, they live in dens that may be underground, in caves, among rocks or in hollow logs and trees. Do you see a fox sneaking around your yard? Let’s find out what you can do about it.
Do Foxes Have Friends?
Unlike a lot of potential pests, foxes notoriously live and hunt alone. They occasionally travel in pairs, but will not be seen in a pack like dogs or wolves (unless they are very young). They are skilled hunters, and they are not picky. They primarily hunt at night and will eat nearly anything they can catch. If they have not finished their food, they are known to bury it.
I SPY: Fox in Your Yard?
First, realize that foxes have a natural fear of people. If a fox is on your property, an uncontrolled food source led it there – not the desire to hurt you. If your yard is more like a farm (in that you house small livestock such as: chickens, rabbits or young lambs) you are far more likely to have a run in with a fox. Foxes prey on these animals in addition to small domestic animals. They are also a big fan of mice, other rodents and fruits. They commonly hunt birds, frogs, insects, lizards and rabbits (dead or alive). If you live closer to the city and don’t control your outdoor food sources, you may attract mice or rats which can in turn attract foxes. The most effective way to prevent drawing a fox to your yard or farm is to keep trashcans well covered. If you have a fenced yard, and are unsure how the fox gained access, keep a lookout for holes dug under fencing or buildings and try to fill them immediately.
