If you own chickens, you may experience foxes killing and hunting your livestock. This can be a serious problem for poultry raisers!

While red foxes will eat mice and control your pest population that way, foxes can be a pest, as well.  They’re active all year round, and usually hunt at night; this makes them a particular danger to smaller animals you keep outside.  If you own chickens, you may experience foxes killing and hunting your livestock.  This can be a serious problem for poultry raisers!  To stop it, you’re going to need a few tips and tricks.  Read on to learn all about them.

Why do Foxes Hunt Chickens?

Simply put, chickens are easy prey when they aren’t protected.  Chickens out in the open can’t defend themselves, and frequently will stay where they are in order to defend their eggs.  Chickens also can’t fly, so they don’t have any way to escape.  Foxes will hunt down chickens and drag them for miles from the kill site, because they need to get the body back to their litter, where they can feed their young.  It’s not infrequent that foxes catch far more than they can chew; the rest of the chicken, the parts that aren’t eaten right away, are hidden underground for storage.  Attacks are particularly frequent during spring time when a fox has a new litter to care for.

How to Protect Chickens

Foxes are smart and patient.  It’s definitely likely that a fox will wait around for an opening to attack chickens if the immediate situation isn’t ideal.  In order to stop them, you can set up live traps that will humanely capture the animal.  At that point, you can call animal control and let us relocate the fox.  Luckily, foxes are smart enough that they will not return to an area if they are familiar with a trap there.  If you don’t want to trap the fox, and simply want to deter it, you should consider investing in an electric fence that also goes underground.  Foxes can jump up to six feet high and are not afraid to dig under fences if they know there’s food inside the perimeter.  You could also invest in a guard dog that will chase away any foxes that wander onto your property for a quick snack.
