If you have pets that you regularly let roam outdoors without your supervision, they might be unsuspecting bait for a wild fox in your neighborhood! Foxes are skilled hunters and known for attacking rabbits, guinea pigs, ducks, chickens, and even cats and dogs. Here are some simple tips to help protect your pets from foxes.

Keep Them Out

The most obvious way to protect your pets from foxes is to prevent foxes from ever getting near them. Foxes typically walk through yards to find food or shelter, so eliminating those two sources can potentially eliminate foxes. Do you like feeding wild birds? Make sure you use a bird feeder or dish instead of laying food out on the ground that will lure foxes and many other pests to your yard. Keep your trash bins secured at all times so that raccoons or foxes can’t have a late night feast.

Take a walk around your yard and see if you can spot any holes or den-like areas that would be inviting to foxes and fill them in or block them off completely. In the same vein, make sure that you keep your garage, shed, or tool shack locked up at night so that they can’t gain entry and make themselves at home.

Prepare

Preparation is key to protecting your pets from foxes if they spend time outside. If you have a crate or structure that your pet spends outdoor time in, make sure that it is strong and secure. Foxes are very good at climbing, jumping, and digging. They are known for easily getting through wood and chicken wire by chewing, digging, or just tossing the structure over. Think strategically about how you house your pets outside if you have foxes in your neighborhood. If you can’t properly protect your yard from foxes and have seen one roaming around your neighborhood, keep your pet inside to make sure that they are safe.
